Heathrow Expansion Plans- Third Runway and 6th Terminal

A construction of 3^rd runway and the 6th terminal building is one of most liked proposals for the expansion of Heathrow airport.

Ever increasing number of travellers on Heathrow has raised a demand to make expansions in the structure of Heathrow airport. In 2006, a report on expansion plans for Heathrow was admired by Govt. officials. The report which was prepared by the Department for transport shown that there should be built the third run way with sixth terminal building to meet the future needs.

Initially plan was backed by British Government and related department heads but due to opposing of opposition parties, it was cancelled in May 2012 by the Government.

Airport commission has backed it again as the most needed expansion to fulfil future needs on July 2015. British Government is now taking a positive approach to do the expansion of Heathrow airport by building a terminal and a runway.

Third way and Sixth terminal planning and opposing

Geoff Hoon, British transport secretary declared in 2009 that Government is backing Heathrow expansion and will give support to BAA (British Airport Authority now name changed to Heathrow Airport Holdings). The plan was t built a run way 2200 meters long and an extra terminal building also.

A Runway at Heathrow Airport

British Government was hopeful to see third run way in work round about 2015, as they declared a statement in 2009.

A major improvement in approval process was made on January 2009, when a detailed plan was approved to build the third runway with sixth terminal and a new Heathrow Hub railway Station.

Plan was to provide rapid transfer to airport via rail from Great Western Main Line.

Opposition Goes against the building of third run way

Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties gone opposing the expansion plans of Heathrow. Which resulted in cancellation of building of new third runway on May 2010.

Discussions and arguments was being delivered in opposition and confirmation of Heathrow expansion after that, but report of British commission on January 2015 made it more powerful opinion to build new runway. Let’s see what action British Govt. takes in this regard.

Opposition Goes against the building of third run way

Although terminal 1 expansion plan is being worked on now a days and the larger terminal 5 with unique facilities have been operational in the year before. Terminal 5 was built with offering more services for the travellers, which includes a large area car parking area.
